The long and stupid story... Uncovered!

For the past few weeks, I've been looking to buy a laptop for school and personal use. Last weekend, I decided to check out the PC show at Suntec to do a little research on the prices. It was so crowded, that I got tired of trying to squeeze through the crowd to look at the laptops on display. I ended up collecting the flyers instead. I stuffed those flyers in my bag while trying to get out of that place. On the way out, KH suggested that we go take a look at the Creative products.

The first thing that caught our attention there was this guy on the stage, doing a show on the Creative Prodikeys keyboard. It was really interesting. With the Prodikeys keyboard, you can play like over a hundred different instruments, and learn how to play the piano from scratch! You can also download MIDIs from the internet, and the Prodikeys software will help you to write the tune into a music scoresheet! And all it costs is just $59! Amazing! We seriously considered buying it.

Halfway through the show, that guy asked for someone to show him how to play the violin, and that whoever does so will get a free Creative Zen Neon! I didn't take him seriously though. Why would that guy give away a $300 product away for free? Just then, an indian man pretended to play on an invisible violin, and that guy handed him the MP3 player!!!

We were shocked. He just gave away an MP3 player! Just like that! Why didn't we just pretend to play the violin? It was so easy! Argh..

I went home and told my mum about it. My mum was shocked too.

"Aiyo, so wasted! Go back tomorrow and get it lor."

So KH and I went back the next day, just to get the MP3 player. Hopefully. There, that same guy was doing the show again, but there was a larger crowd this time. KH and I went to the front and waited in anticipation for him to ask The Question. He probably recognised us. But we couldn't care less. Heck, we ARE so gonna get that free MP3 player!

This time, he asked a different question.

Guy: If u call 88 keys a grand piano, what do you call this with 137 keys?
Me: *raises hand up eagerly* (whispers to kh: "answer is prodikeys")
KH: Prodikeys!
Guy: Yes! It's Prodikeys! *hands MP3 player to KH*



I couldn't believe it! We actually got it! Free MP3 player for nothing! We opened the white box, and there was the beautiful brown Creative Zen Neon! I thought to myself,"WOW.. now I can finally have the same MP3 player as KH! I'll give my iPod to Gerrie, and Mum can have my discman! Wonderful!"

KH and I decided that now that we've gotten a $300 product for free, it would be really worth it to buy the Prodikeys keyboard for only $59. It was the last half an hour for the last day of the PC show already, and we hurried to join the queue at the Creative booth.

At the queue, KH and I took out the MP3 player and admired it again.

Me: It's brown! It's soooo nice!!!
KH: Yeah! Even though it doesn't come with the headphones, it's good enough already.
Me: Yeah! This is the MAIN thing!
KH: Yeah! What can you expect?! It's free!!!

A man behind us overhears our conversation, and looks at us and our MP3 with some interest.

Moments later...

KH: Wait, there are words stuck on the screen.
Me: Maybe it's a sticker? Come, let me take it out.

*tries to peel off the sticker with my nails, but to no avail.*

I turned it over and there was this square black thing glued to the back of the MP3 player. It suddenly dawned on me... It wasn't an MP3 player. It was a fridge magnet!

We were horrified.

The fridge magnet looks exactly like the real Creative Zen Neon. It feels the same, weighs the same, looks the same. If KH were to add on, it IS the same. But unfortunately in this case, it ISN'T the same! =(

'How could we be sooo stupid!'

'This is sooooo embarrassing!!'

'No wonder it came in a lousy white box!'

'Aiyo where got so good, give free MP3 player?'

'That thing only costs $59, why would he give out something that's worth $300?'

'Why didn't we think of that?'

The man behind us laughs.

We decided that it was too embarrassing to stay there any longer. Plus, now that we know we didn't get a free MP3 player, it wouldn't be really worth it to buy that Prodikeys keyboard anymore. Anyway, KH and I would get sick of it very quickly too.

As we head back home...

KH: Aiyo, next time we don't gian this kind of things liao lah.
Me: Ya lor.. where got so good de?
KH: Haiz.. no wonder that indian man didn't look so happy.
Me: YA! To think I looked so eager!
KH: Never mind. At least now we know that that indian man didn't get it too.
Me: Yeah.
KH: At least we tried. And we know. If we didn't, we would still think he got that free MP3.
Me: Yeah.

After some thought...

Me: Wait. Do you realise that he NEVER said he was going to give away a free MP3?
KH: Oh yah!
ME: He just said, answer this and you get a free this! *points to the "MP3 player"*. Answer that, and you get a free limited edition this! *points to the "MP3 player"*.
KH: He must be laughing at us! He must be thinking,"HAHA, those 2 idiots fell for my trick!"
Me: Gosh, that is sooo embarrassing!

Moral of the story: Don't gian free things. At least, be sure of what you will be getting. =(
