Thailand Trip 2007-- Loei (Day 6)
This is THE post I've been wanting to tell everybody about. THE best part of my trip!
All of us got up early again (as usual). My uncle told me he was going to take us up into the mountains and MAYBE camp there. I was thrilled but I honestly didn't think we would get to camp there. Aunt rented a 7-seater 4 wheel drive the previous day and I assumed that only the 6 of us are going--me, kh, aunt, uncle, and 2 cousins. Well, guess what. 7 more peeps hopped on. Imagine THAT! 7-seater car loaded with 13 peeps. 1 adult driver, 1 adult and 1 child at the front, 4 adults in the middle seats, 1 adult, 1 teen, 2 kids at the back seats, 2 more kids in the boot. All baggage loaded on top of the car. PRO not?
If anything, these 7 people need this trip more than I do. For one thing, they rarely get to travel out of the village. Everytime my uncle comes, he's like santa claus to them. He'll take them out, treat them to buffet dinners and all, buy stuff for them, and ya know, they are really really happy during this time, and I think that's a really great thing to do, blessing others with what you have. =)

It was a LONG and WINDY trip up Mt. Phu Rua in the Loei province. We travelled along the border of Thailand and Laos all the way. It was very very beautiful. Very uncomfortable journey (seeing how squeezy it was), very long and tiring, but it was worth it. =) We would've gone to Laos to visit as well if we had the time. Well, I'd really want to do that this year. =)

We drove up to Lonnoi cliff and from there we climbed up to the summit. From the cliff you can see the summit and it looks really near. But it was one long, steep and rocky path up. All of us were panting lah.

My uncle was telling them that if they shouted at the mountains, there will be an echo. So he was like,"HELLO!!!", then very softly,"hello.." That was so lame lah. =.=

After which we headed to the campsite lower down on the mountain. Couldn't believe we actually got to camp! =) Managed to rent 2 army tents for the 13 of us. All the tents were already pitched and ready to use. Sleeping bags, pillows and mattresses provided. Woah.

We played some camping games. Pop and I kept losing and we had to do forfeits like dancing for 10 seconds. It was hilarious. Very very fun. Too bad we only camped for a night! =(
Ya know how the windows on army tents can be detached from the outside. It was really dark at night and Aunt's bro will sometimes stick his head into the window, make a scary face and say,"Piiii....(ghost in thai)". It was funny. Scary, but funny. Lol.
That night, Kh and I did not bathe, but we washed our hair by filling our water bottles with the icy-cold tapwater and pouring it over our heads. Way too cold to bathe. Brrr...

Thailand Trip 2007-- Bangkok/Udon (Day 4&5)
Day 4 was just last minute shopping at Platinum Plaza before we headed off to the airport again to catch a domestic flight to Udon Thani. Aunt came to pick us up at 7pm from the airport and took us to a night market nearby for dinner and shopping. Then it's back to her kampong again. =)
Wow... lotsa major changes in the house and farm. Newly renovated kitchen and toilet! The workmanship is not very good cuz the construction workers there have not done or seen things like this before.
Day 5 onwards is real fun. I mean forget all my Bangkok posts. The fun really really starts here. =)
That very morning, we got up real early cuz it's very bright by 6am already, and the roosters are all making a lot of noise anyway. Went to visit the padi field to help my aunt's bro move the hay to the farmhouse.
Lots and lots of hay!
My aunt and 2 cousins arrived at the kampong 3 weeks before us. And my dear cousin Dennis took the liberty to build himself a treehouse! There's even a bottle of Miranda in it. These kids really know how to enjoy life. Hey he's only 9 btw. =X
Ya know when he said "treehouse", I imagined it to be a HomeAlone kinda treehouse. But this tree is only about 4m tall, and it's a very thin tree. According to him, it can sit 3 children or 1 adult. Still, no way I was going up there. Helped him paint his treehouse though.

Then we went to visit the elementary school which is just next door. Ya know they only need to study for 3 years? As in, 1 year 2 levels. Complete P1-6 in 3 years. Wow.
Then we went to the farm to see the newly built shelter and pond...

They're very smart. They know how to find their way to the stream to bathe and drink water. =)
After which, we went to the airport again to pick my uncle up. And he treated us to a thai steamboat-bbq dinner! About 100+B per person only. Woah. It's so cheap, I don't even feel like stuffing myself with food.
The fun never ends! Stay tune for a very unforgettable Day 6! =)

Thailand Trip 2007-- Bangkok (Day 3)
Dream World is about an hour and a half drive from Bangkok city central. Somewhere near the old airport at Don Muang.
My intention was to take a short cab ride to Hualumphong railway station and transfer a public bus to that place, but us lazy bums didn't want to get up so early, so we took a cab there directly.
Dream World is sort of a mini version of Disneyland. Hmm... not THAT fun, but satisfactory. We got tickets at 550B (includes Snowtown tickets and lunch buffet) at the tour agency as mentioned earlier. Usual price about 470B, without snowtown tickets and lunch buffet. Snowtown tickets are about 130B, so yep, we got ourselves a pretty good bargain. =)
Watch Kh on the flying coaster! Ah... not scary at all. He was so disappointed with it. It's supposed to be THE more thrilling ride there. Nevertheless...
Kh and I thought this viking ship looks smaller than the one at Escape, and we just ASSUMED that it'll just be a relaxing ride. We happily took the far end seats on the viking and ya know the whole ride was a total nightmare. :O
This freaking viking ship has only a metal pole to hold on to. It went so high, I was almost upside down, and hello, I was holding on to that freaking metal pole for my dear life, and I could feel my whole body weight pressing on the metal pole which in turn made a creaking noise. =( I was crying out,"Please stop, please stop! Make it STOP!!!!!!"
And ya know such rides usually only reach the peak for awhile and then it goes down. This freaking viking ship DOES NOT! It went up to its peak like over 5 times before gradual coming down again. I don't know how long that ride took but it felt like hours up there. I've never been so scared sitting on a ride my whole life. =(
Worse, when it finally came to a stop, that ride conductor was like,"One more time?" All of us were like,"NOOOO!!!!!" Ya know, usually peeps would shout YES but not this one. I think even the middle people were suffering, seeing how the ship almost went vertical. Eek.
As mentioned earlier, we wanted to take the public transport to be able to really blend in with the thais and see what living in thailand is really about. We were determined to do so hence we took the public transport home.
From DreamWorld, we took a shuttle bus out to the main road, walked some distance to the bus stop, and took a bus to Don Muang Railway station as according to the instructions stated on the website and my Lonely Planet book. Apparently, the bus journey from Dream World to Don Muang Railway station was about 30mins and the bus stop wasn't even near to the station. We had to walk a freaking 2km and it was so hard to find that place! :O We got lost along the way and had to ask a few people for directions.

It was cheap though. The bus ride to the train station was only 17B and the train ticket from Don Muang to Hualumphong station was only 12B! Kh and I felt that anything below 20B is not even worth counting. It's so cheap, we don't even know how to count it!

Hualumphong train station is one of the major train stations in Bangkok. It's packed with angmoh backpackers! So anyways, Kh and I bought a box of Dunkin' Donuts as it was so freakin cheap we couldn't resist.
After which, we headed to Patong Night Market via subway to continue shopping! (There were so many things we wanted to buy last night but didn't have the money.)

Happy 2008 to all! Here's to a great year ahead!
Had a countdown gathering with the girls at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel. Paid a whooping S$50 EACH for a room there. So that's $300 in total. Kh and I were thinking how many nights we could have stayed in our nice little hotel in Bangkok with that amount of money. Hmm, for $300, the room wasn't that great. It's nice, spacious and clean, but totally not worth it for that price. The only thing most appealing about it was the bathroom. Woah, if I have a bathroom like that, I would probably spend most of my time in it!
